ODBC Matrikon: Step-by-Step Guide to Connecting to an SQL Database

Created by Jose Fabian Solano, Modified on Wed, 26 Feb at 2:11 PM by Jose Fabian Solano

Step 1: Launch Matrikon and Configure the Database Connection

First, open the Matrikon software. Once inside, follow these steps to create a connection to the database using the ODBC protocol:

Click on Connect to Database to initiate the connection setup.
In the new panel that appears, select the configured ODBC adapter from the available options.
Enter the required credentials (username and password) to authenticate the connection.

Step 2: Configuring the ODBC Channel (If Not Already Set Up)

If the ODBC channel is not yet configured, follow these steps to set it up:

Click on the Configuration button, which will open the ODBC Data Source window.
In this window, navigate to the System DSN tab.
Click on Add to create a new data source.
In the new panel that appears, select SQL Server from the list of available drivers.

Step 3: Configuring the SQL Server Connection

Once you've selected SQL Server, a new configuration panel will open. Follow these steps to set up the connection:

In the Name field, enter a name for the connection, such as SQL.
In the Server field, input the IP address of the server hosting the database. If the server is local, simply enter 127.0.0.1.
Click Next to proceed with the configuration.

Step 4: Configuring Authentication and Database Credentials

In the next panel, follow these steps to configure the authentication method:

Select the option to log in using username and password.
Enter the database credentials (username and password) for the SQL server to authenticate the connection.

Step 5: Selecting the Database

After configuring the authentication, you'll need to select the target database:

In the next panel, check the first box to enable the database selection.
From the available options, choose the name of your database where you want to send the data.

Step 6: Finalizing the Configuration and Testing the Connection

Once you've selected your database, proceed to the next panel and click Finish. This will finalize the setup.

A new panel will appear, allowing you to test the connection.
Click on Test Data Source to verify if the connection is properly established.

If the configuration was done correctly, you should see a confirmation message similar to the following:

"Test completed successfully."

This message confirms that the connection to the database has been successfully established.

Now that the connection has been successfully tested, you can continue with the Matrikon configuration:

Select the SQL communication channel you created earlier.
Enter the database credentials (username and password) for the connection.

This will finalize the setup and allow Matrikon to communicate with the SQL database using the configured ODBC channel.

Step 7: Continuing the Matrikon Configuration

Now that the connection has been successfully tested, proceed with the following steps to complete the Matrikon configuration:

  1. Select the SQL communication channel you previously created.
  2. Enter the database credentials (username and password) to establish the connection.

This will finalize the setup and enable Matrikon to communicate with the SQL database using the configured ODBC channel.

Step 8: Browsing for the Desired Tag

After completing the configuration, follow these steps to locate the tag you want to use:

Click on the red icon to enable browsing functionality.
Once the browse feature is activated, you can search for and select the tag you wish to use.

This will allow you to select the appropriate tag for your configuration and proceed with the data handling.

Step 9: Applying the Configuration and Reviewing Transactions

Finally, to save and execute the configuration, follow these steps:

Click on Apply to save the settings and execute the transaction.
You can also explore the other tabs for additional information about the ODBC Client's functionality.
Under the Current Transactions tab, you will find the transactions that you have added.

This will complete the setup process, and you'll be able to monitor and manage your ODBC transactions effectively.
